Alfred Thomas Moffatt, of Fort Washington, PA, passed away on July 15, 2016 at Temple University Hospital, surrounded by family. He was 69. Since his birth on Jan. 5, 1947 to Alfred C. & Mildred Davis Moffatt of Akron, PA, Al has been dedicated to the percussion community. He graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy in 1964 and VFM Junior College in 1966 as a 2 nd Lieutenant, and was a member of their drum corps. He marched with the Hawthorne Caballeros for 3 years and attended Lebanon Valley College. Al entered the Army and became a Ranger in 1970. He married Carol Swalm on June 12, 1971 and they were stationed in Germany. After graduating from Temple University with a degree in English, Al worked as a teacher in Centennial school district from 1974-1983. He also taught their drumline and indoor color guard. In 1981, he took over Moffatt Music from his father and began working for the Zildjian Company. Al's work with the Zildjian Cymbal Company was always a joy to him. He was a Distributor, Sales Rep for 7 states and their Marching Consultant for Drum Corps which was his real passion. He was a pioneer and driving force in the marching and percussive arts communities, especially Drum Corps. His influence and work is recognized throughout the music industry and the marching world. Al worked with numerous school band programs, locally and across the Nation. Most notably, he worked with Upper Moreland HS for over 40 years until his death. He became a respected judge and worked with Cavalcade, USBands, MAPS, and WGI. Mr. Moffatt was also heavily involved in Boy Scouts. Since 1983 he has been a part of Troop 542, and served as the Troop Committee Chairman for 30 years until his death. He helped over 100 scouts attain the rank of Eagle, enabled trips to Philmont Scout Ranch, and was a recipient of the District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award amongst others. He was also a member of the Freemasons. Al is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carol; his three children and two grandchildren; David and Shannon Moffatt, their children Riley and Jackson, Midlothian, VA; Lauren and John Burns, Glenside, PA; and Andrew Moffatt, Philadelphia, PA; as well as his four "granddogs" Titan, Monty, Jackson, and Stella. A viewing will be held Friday, July 22, 2016 at Jarrettown United Methodist Church, 1460 Limekiln Pike, Dresher, PA, from 11am-1pm, followed by a private burial with family and close friends. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held on Friday, August 5, 2016 at Jarrettown United Methodist Church with visitation from 9am-11am; service and luncheon afterwards. In lieu of flowers, donations in Al's name may be made to United Network for Organ Sharing or Pets for Vets.
