Arthur Y Elliot MD, PhD

Arthur Y. Elliott of Lansdale passed away on June 23, 2019 at the age of 83. He was son of Arthur Ottis Elliott and Thelma (Nee York) Elliott. Dr. Elliott was an experienced senior scientist with over 49 years working in the pharmaceutical / Vaccine industry with both start-up biotechnology companies and multinational research, development and manufacturing organizations. He has been a key leader in the development and licensing of over 10 pediatric and adult vaccines in the United States and Europe while serving in positions of Executive Director of Biological Operations at Merck and Co and Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President at North American Vaccine. Dr Elliott founded the Biological Consulting Company in 1999 and has consulted with several companies in the pharmaceutical industry plus WHO, PATH, The Gates Foundation, and the NIH. In addition, he worked for five years in the HHS in the area of Influenza Pandemic Preparation during the Swine Influenza Pandemic of 2008-9. Since leaving the HHS in 2011 he served as a consultant to the US Army on projects involving Medical Counter Measures. Dr.. Elliott is the author of over fifty articles published in scientific peer review journals plus chapters in scientific books and patents issued for the process development of biological products.

1962 - 1970 Senior Research Scientist Pitman Moore & Co. Div. of Dow Chemical Company, Zionsville, Indiana

1970 - 1978 Associate Professor, Depts. Of Microbiology and Surgery, University of Minnesota school of Medicine, Minneapolis, MN

1978 - 1994 Employed by Merck & Co, West Point, PA., Began employment as Manager of Viral Vaccine Production (Influenza, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, and Varicella) and progressed through several layers of management (including interaction with FDA as Merck's Responsible Head) to his last job as Executive Director of World Wide Biological Operations.

1994 - 1999 Employed as Senior Vice President of Operations and Chief Operating Officer of North American Vaccine, Beltsville, MD. This was a start-up biotech company that developed, licensed and produced (1) a new acellular pertussis vaccine (DTaP) and (2) a conjugated Meningitis group C vaccine.

1999 - 2006 Employed by Aventis & Co (Sanofi), Swiftwater, PA as a consultant to work on problems in vaccine research, development and manufacturing including formulation, filling and lyophilization. Assisted in the design and development of plans for new facilities for the manufacture of Influenza Vaccine (processing 600,000 eggs per day) and the manufacture of a new conjugated Meningitis vaccine.

2006 - 2011 Employed by Health and Human Services in Washington D. C. as a senior Scientist in the area of Influenza Vaccine Pandemic Preparedness during the Swine Influenza Pandemic of 2008-9. Worked as Senior Scientist in charge of all research and development and procurement vaccine contracts in The Chemical, Biological, Radiation and Nuclear section of HHS from 2009 through May of 2011.

2011- Employed as a consultant by the US Army and several biotech companies to work on vaccine projects. Served on the Board of Directors of IBio, Inc Newark, DE after 2011, and additionally, served as Acting Chief Scientific Officer to PharmAthene, Inc.,

2012 - served on the Board of Directors of Biological Consulting of Alexandria, VA.

Awards and Recognition:
1964 Recognized as a Outstanding Young Man in America under 35 Years by the US Junior Chamber of Commerce of Indiana.

1966 Outstanding Basic Scientist at Pitman Moore Division of the DOW Chemical Company

1975 First Place in Medical Writing from Eidtors of Minnesota Medicine

2003 Distinguished Alumnus Award in Biological Sciences from Purdue University.

Dr Elliott served in the United States Air Force, was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Ambler, American Association for the Advancement of Science and American Society for Microbiology. He is survived by his wife of 41 years Pamela (Nee Rose). He is also survived by his Daughter Laurie Klingenmeyer of Shoreview, MN and his son David Elliott of Doylestown, PA, and his 3 grandchildren Eden, Colby and Lucy. Also surviving are brother in laws Eric Rose, Fred (Nancy) Rose and Rod (Laurie) Rose all of Ceder Falls, IA, 3 nieces and 5 nephews. A Celebration of Life service will be held on July 21, 2019 at 4:15PM. Family and friends are invited from 3pm to 7pm at Talamore Country Club, 723 Talamore Drive, Ambler PA 19002. Interment private. We have lost a devout Christian, a wonderful husband, a loving father and a dedicated scientist. Such a kind and caring Texas gentleman. He will be greatly missed.
