Jo-Ann Lewis Horner, nee Lewis, age 82, of Ambler, PA passed away peacefully in her home on May 14, 2023. Jo-Ann was born in Philadelphia, PA, to Mrs. Myrtle Lewis. She grew up in Audubon, NJ, with her grandmother Nellie, sister Eleanor and brother Sydney. She attended Ursinus College where she was an economics major and member of Omega Chi sorority. Afterwards, she was a buyer for Strawbridge’s Department Store in Philadelphia. In 1967 she met David E. Horner whom she married in 1969 and with whom raised two children.
Jo-Ann was a talented athlete. In 1953 she started twirling, including batons that were on fire, and won 51 medals and 11 trophies. In college she played field hockey and was a Majorette. She made many friends playing tennis at Frog Hollow and McGarity’s, golf at Old York Road Country Club, and skiing at Elk Mountain. She possessed a seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of flowers and plants. In 1993 she won first place for novice class entry at the Philadelphia Flower Show as a member of the Woodland Garden Club. Jo-Ann enjoyed her volunteer work for the Mattie N. Dixon Community Cupboard and Family Promise through her church.
Jo-Ann was an avid traveler and enjoyed adventures. But she was at her happiest at the beach in Cape May, NJ, with her feet in the sand, listening to the waves, and riding her bike on the boardwalk.
A thoughtful friend, she was an impressive homemaker, loving and attentive wife, mother, and grandmother (“Gaga”). She was a loving dog mom to Tess and Gaga to Vader. Jo-Ann is preceded in death by her husband, David E. Horner. Jo-Ann is survived by her daughters Beth H. Farquharson (Mike) and Amy Horner Hanley (Adrian), and four grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to call between 10:00 and 11:00 on Wednesday, May 31st at First Presbyterian Church of Ambler, 4 S. Ridge Ave, Ambler, PA. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 11:00am.
