Paul Kenneth Bickel, Jr. of Ambler, passed away surrounded by family on Saturday March 1, 2025 at Fort Washington Estates.
Ken was born on August 8, 1931 in Sellersville, PA to the late Paul and Marion (née Schaffer) Bickel. He was raised in Telford and graduated from Souderton High School.
Known as Paul in the military, he served honorably in the United States Air Force as a Electronic Technician and made several lifelong friends while in the service. He was a Lead Technician at UNIVAC working on the UNIVAC 1 computer, the first commercial computer in the U.S. It was the forerunner of today's digital computers. He was part owner of Holgate Harbor Marina where his children spent many summers working and enjoying boating, fishing and beach time. His motto was “follow the golden rule”, he was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Ken was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, the late Joan (née Kramer) Bickel on September 27, 2020.
He is survived by four children; Scott Bickel (Juliane) of Fort Washington, PA, Mark Bickel (Christina) of Glenwood, MD, Paul Bickel (Maggie) of Harleysville, PA, and Sharon Check (Glenn) of Perkasie, PA; 13 grandchildren, Todd (Laura), Laura, Derrick (Jessica), Brian, Lindsay (Nick), Christian, Clare, Anthony (Maggie), Christopher, Ryan (Maggie), Glenn, Tyler, and Blair; as well as 4 great-grandchildren, Ryker, Carson, Josie, and Henry. He is also survived by a brother, Douglas Bickel (Cindy) and a sister, Janet Lapp (Arlin).
A memorial service honoring Paul’s life will be held on Saturday March 8, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church located at 235 Summit Avenue, Fort Washington, PA 19034. Family and friends may call at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Whitemarsh Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Paul’s name may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church at the above-mentioned address.
