Theodore James Smith

September 15, 1942 — December 6, 2023

Theodore James Smith, 81, of the Somerton section of Philadelphia, passed away peacefully in his home on December 6th , 2023 surrounded by his loving family.

Ted as he was known by friends and family, was born in Philadelphia to parents Theodore James Smith Sr.  and Mary Smith on September 15, 1942. He went to Father Judge High School, Class of 1960.

Ted married his high school sweetheart, the love of his life, Jean Rose on May 25, 1963 in Philadelphia. Ted had a lifelong career working as a machinist and diesel engine rebuilder for Smith Brothers.

Ted enjoyed his free time fishing, hunting and  spending time with his family.  But his most beloved pastime was baseball, including coaching and managing teams. When the grandchildren arrived he took pride in watching their games, school events and dance recitals, whatever they were involved in.

Theodore is survived by his wife Jean Smith, daughter Lisa and Bo Birkhead, daughters Gina McHugh and Christina Smith, son Theodore and Nicole Smith. His sisters Eileen Kowalczyk  and Mary Jean McCabe and Bill Rose who is a brother to Ted. Grandchildren Tyler and Christine McHugh, Dylan McHugh, Brandon Birkhead, Bridget Birkhead, Shea Mulgrave, Brookelynn  Mulgrave and Luke Birkhead. Great grandchildren Lucianna McHugh, Aubrey Mulgrave, Mattie McHugh, Myla McHugh and Greyson Birkhead. Ted had so many friends both young and old, and family members  who will miss his presence dearly.

At this time a future date will be determined to celebrate Theodore as his wish was “nothing  fancy, just ham and cabbage at the house with family”.
