Theresa McGonagle

Theresa McGonagle (Nee Docherty) of Ambler, PA passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her children on July 13, 2017 at the age of 78. She was born October 3, 1938 in Dumbarton, Scotland, daughter of the late John and Jane Docherty (Nee Stoppani). Theresa was the loving and devoted wife of Eugene, her husband of 57 years, who she loved in sickness and health. He predeceased her on March 1, 2017. She is survived by sons John of Ambler, Vincent (Erin) of Chevy Chase, MD, Eugene of Ambler and daughter Roisin Hart (Jonathan) of Ambler. Also surviving are seven beautiful grandchildren: James, Ian, Gavin, Caitlin, Colin, Declan and Keenan. She is also survived by Liz (James) and Lee Curran of Scotland, her dear sister Mary (John) of Ridley Park, PA, Jean (Harry) Harrison of England, Father John Docherty of England, and Joseph (Pat) Docherty of Scotland. She was predeceased by siblings Ina, Nan, Helen, and Francis. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Sister Anastasia McGonagle F.M.S.L of St. Mary of the Angels, Knock, County Mayo, Ireland. Many nieces and nephews from around the world will miss their sweet Aunt Theresa. After arriving in America in 1958, she met the love of her life, Eugene, at The Irish Club in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia. While she loved, married and took on an Irish last name, when mistaken for being Irish, she quickly and politely declared her Scottish heritage! Theresa and Eugene raised their family in Ambler. She worked for The Ambler Gazette for 33 years until her retirement in 2009. She lived out her faith as a devoted member of St. Joseph Church in Ambler where she was proud to be a Eucharistic minister. She always had time, a hug and fresh baked cookies for her grandchildren, enjoyed reading, cross stitch and would readily offer a helping hand. Recently diagnosed with MDS, she was taken from us too soon. Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of Theresa's life at St. Joseph's RC Church, 16 S. Spring Garden Street, Ambler, PA, 19002 on Tuesday July 18, 2017 at 10AM. Friends and family may call after 9AM until the service, officiated by Fr. John Docherty and Father Tully, begins at 10AM. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Donations may be made in Theresa's name to MDS-Foundation.org or Abington Hospice at AbingtonHealth.org/WaysOfGiving.
